Jess Lafser

biography \\

A native from river town Saint Louis, Missouri, Lafser grew up following in the footsteps of her grandfather Bill Nunn, a skilled photographer and musician. Jesse Lafser was coincidentally named after a Thomas Hart Benton painting of a woman playing the guitar. Tracing the pathways of fate, Lafser began playing the piano at a young age, followed by the trumpet. But it wasn’t until she saw an old black and white photograph of her grandfather playing the guitar that she was pulled towards the instrument that would quickly become her sought after craft. Lafser took up classical guitar lessons for 3 years, and then self-taught herself other styles of guitar playing. She has been writing poetry and lyric since she can remember and finally found her love for putting words to music when she first picked up an acoustic guitar. In 2005, Lafser moved to Nashville, where she currently resides, to study music theory and to begin building a musical foundation. Since then she has played locally and in surrounding cities sharing her insights in the form of song and folklore. In 2008, Lafser recorded 2 EP’s--Paper Words was released first, followed by Normandy Place. Lafser has the unique ability to maintain her over-arching style while writing songs that possess striking contrast and variety. Lafser’s musicianship has been greatly influenced by longtime folk icon, Bob Dylan, as well as other classics such as Gillian Welch, Damien Rice, Patty Griffin, and Josh Ritter. She is also very interested in traditional Irish folk music. Lafser is ahead of her time with her brilliant acoustic voice, intricate guitar skills, ballad-like melodies, and poetic lyrics. Her music resembles the rich grass roots of acoustic folk and americana. Lafser uses her style to create and weave powerful images that infect the mind with emotion and thought. Jesse Lafser undoubtedly penetrates the folk world to the core by not restricting herself to the paths left before her. She treads a new path--one that will surely bring more abums in the future.
